Sledding

Krnica hut, Kranjska Gora

This is a beautiful walk to a lovely cottage beneath the mighty walls of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. When it comes to sledding, the only "fun" section is the last 30 minutes of ascent (just before the hut). If you are only interested in sledding, take the option number 3 described below, but if you wish to do a longer walk you can start already from the center of Kranjska Gora. Slovenia is a winter paradise!

Basic information
LocationKranjska Gora, Gorenjska
Total km: 1.5 km
Altitude: 980 - 1120 m
Total vertical climb: 140 m
Sled rental: no
Night sledding: no

How to get there:
Option 1: Start the trip in the center of Kranjska Gora.
Option 2: Head from Kranjska Gora towards Bovec (or Vršič mountain pass). Drive past Lake Jasna and park by the road before it turns right, crosses 'Velika Pišnica' stream again and starts to ascend steeper.
Option 3 (best for sledding): Drive from Kranjska Gora towards Bovec (or Vršič mountain pass) to hairpin turn number 3. Park by the road there.

Description:
Option 1 (three and a half hours): If you start the trip in Kranjska Gora center, follow the main road towards Bovec (or Vršič mountain pass) to a bridge over Pišnica stream. Soon after it a footpath that is usually well trodden branches off to the right next to the lake. Go along this path (between the lake and Pišnica stream) and a bit higher merge with the road towards Vršič pass again. Stay on the asphalt road for a few 100 meters. By the next bridge over Velika Pišnica continue straight on along the stream. From here on see Option 2.

Option 2 (two and a half hours): Before the bridge across Velika Pišnica go straight on a wide path on the right river bank. The path is quite flat at first and doesn’t look very promising for sledding. Keep on the path and in the last section it ascends much steeper - great terrain for sledding.

Option 3 (one hour and 45 minutes): This path is a bit less popular. Just before the 3rd hairpin turn on the road towards Vršič pass turn left and descend along a marked path. Cross a stream and a large meadow. Before long, you merge with Option 2. Now all it takes is the final ascend to the Krnica mountain hut.

Sledding:
The best sledding track is just below Krnica hut. It is quite steep in some sections and you'll have to use your legs quite a lot. The path descends 140 altitude meters in just 1,5 km. There are a few more shorter sledding parts in the lower section of Option 2, otherwise you have to go on foot. You can rent sledges at various ski equipment rentals in Kranjska Gora.
