Around Medvode

This is a nice and very diverse MTB tour across the hills between Medvode and Škofja Loka. The ascents are quite difficult whereas the descents are fabulous. The tour has 2 summits: the panoramic St. Jakob hill and the wooded Gontarska Planina. Almost the whole time you will ride in a shady forest with occasional views on Ljubljana basin and surrounding hills.

Starting point:
The tour starts and finishes in Preska near Medvode (in the suburbs of Ljubljana). On the road 'Ljubljana – Medvode' turn left at a traffic light at the beginning of Medvode. Cross the railway and turn right. At the next crossroad turn left and continue until you come to a primary school Preska. Park there.

Description:
Behind Preska primary school go uphill on an asphalt road, ride past a chapel and the asphalt soon comes to an end. Continue on a dirt road towards south-west. Be careful not to turn towards Žlebe or Studenčnice, but go directly towards Mamovec farm. The road is ascending constantly and brings you past the Mamovec farm to a 'saddle' at Tehovec village. Here you will spot signposts for St. Jakob, which is to the left ahead of you. From the dirt road turn left onto a path, which winds around the summit of St. Jakob and ascends to a panoramic church on the top. From here return the Tehovec saddle, carry on through the village and at the end of Tehovec village turn sharply to the left onto a dirt road. An exceptionally wonderful tractor slovenia guided mountain bike toursroad descends to Ločnica valley. Once you reach an asphalt road, turn right. Ride for about 1 km on the asphalt and then turn left onto an ascending dirt road towards Osolnik (signpost). Follow this road until a sharp right curve (about 600 altitude meters), where you turn left onto a smaller tractor road towards south. After about 700 meters turn left on a path-crossoroad, descend a bit and follow the cart road all the way to Govejek hut.

A singletrack starts from here on. Continue on the path in the direction of a cross above the Govejek hut and keep on the left marked path towards Gontarska Planina. In a gentle ascent you will reach a pass below Gontarska Planina; here you turn right to a slope, which forces you to carry the bike for about 50 altitude meters to Gontarska Planina (the highest point of our tour). A splendid descent on a beautiful singletrack (be careful and respectful to hikers!) brings you to a crossroad of five roads below Osolnik hill. A short ascent on a dirt road follows to Rožnik farm and then it only goes downhill from here. After a good kilometer of descending turn sharply to the left on an evident crossroad of dirt roads; a kilometer further turn to the right onto a smaller tractor road. Follow it along a 'ridge' until you reach a panoramic meadow where a singletrack starts again. At first ride by the edge of the forest with a view on Škofja Loka, but then the path turns to a lovely forest full of blueberry bushes. Keep right the whole time and you reach an asphalt road in Pungert village. Turn right and return to the starting point on the asphalt road.
