Velika Mojstrovka and Župančič Ravine

Velika Mojstrovka is slightly less visited than its famous neighbor – Mala Mojstrovka. We will ascend onto Mala Mojstrovka through 'Župančič' ravine, which calls for some more mountaineering experience, and then proceed on the ridge to Velika Mojstrovka. Truly beautiful tour with splendid views on most of Slovenian highest peaks. This is a popular ski-touring trip as well.

Basic information
LocationKranjska Gora, Gorenjska
Difficulty:
Duration: 5 h
Start point elevation: 1611 m
Highest point: 2366 m
Total vertical climb: 830 m
Skiing difficulty:
Starting point:
The starting point is Vršič pass (1611 m) on road 'Kranjska Gora – Bovec'. In case the road is not negotiable due to snow, you will have to park lower, which can make the tour much longer.

Description:
From Vršič ascend westwards directly or in hairpins across a wide slope. Soon you will notice a saddle called Vratca on your left (where the 'usual' path to Mojstrovka leads) and on the far right opens a terrain leading towards Šitna Glava. You go straight up towards the rocks in the middle of the wide slope. When you come close to the rocks you will notice a clear entrance to 'Pripravniška' ravine on your left, through the middle leads 'Sestopna' ravine, but you go to the right by the rocks to the entrance into 'Župančič' ravine. After a short narrow part the 'shoulder' widens significantly. Follow the terrain straight up and turn left at the end onto a more rocky and difficult terrain (this place is not very clear; actually there are several options). You reach the ridge of Mala Mojstrovka only a few meters below its summit.

Our tour continues westwards. At first go down a few meters to the saddle below Mala Mojstrovka, and then follow the clear passages across the steep terrain to the summit, which most people mistake for Velika Mojstrovka. You will have to go a little further along the ridge to reach Velika Mojstrovka. At first the ridge is simple and then a few passages around rocks await you just below the summit of Velika Mojstrovka. If you wish you can continue on the ridge towards Zadnja Mojstrovka, but we decided to descend back to Vršič.

Descend towards south-east across great skiing terrain, keep left and arrive to a small valley that comes down from Mala Mojstrovka. Skiers will perhaps ski off to Drevesnica, otherwise cross in the south-east direction towards the ridge, which takes you to Vratca saddle and back to Vršič pass.

Highest point/summit:
Velika Mojstrovka: 2366 m
Mala Mojstrovka: 2333 m

Duration::
Vršič – Mala Mojstrovka (across Župančič ravine): 2 h
Mala Mojstrovka - Velika Mojstrovka: 30 min
Velika Mojstrovka - Vršič: 2.30 min
Total: 5 h

Difficulty: 5 (The ascent through Župančič ravine is an alpinist tour – only skilled and properly equipped mountaineers/alpinists should tackle it in good snow conditions! Other parts of the tour are not very demanding, but they do cross areas that are endangered by avalanches. Be careful!)

Skiing:
Ski down the above described direction of descent from Velika Mojstrovka. If you are headed to Vršič across Vratca saddle, be careful not to get too low. Cross towards south-east back to the ridge at approximately 2050 altitude meters. When you reach the narrow part of the ridge just above Vratca saddle, inconveniences for skiers increase, so there is no shame in taking off your skis in this section. From Vratca saddle ski back to Vršič.
Skiing difficulty: 3
Skiing duration: ca. 1 h
