|This year's October is rewarding us with amazing sunny autumn days, the fall colors are getting more intense every day, chestnut is abundant and the vineyards and wine cellars are as lively as it gets. It is the perfect time to stretch your legs, get on your bicycle and visit Slovenian winegrowing regions. Here are a few ideas for great cycling trips among colorful vineyards and some of our favorite spots that won't leave you hungry and thirsty :)
1. Jeruzalem (eastern Slovenia)
Between the towns of Ljutomer and Ormož you will find a fairy tale hilly landscape with low traffic roads that wind between the endless vineyards. Hill after hill, a climb after climb and marvelous views throughout the region. This was our tour. Not too easy, but not too hard in order to leave enough time to indulge the local culinary specialties :)
Sleep & eat: In the Jeruzalem hills we recommend 2 great farm stays. They both offer excellent wine of their own production and typical local food. Hlebec Farmhouse is a bit more 'arty' whereas the Püklavec farmhouse offers a terrace with a phenomenal view.
2. Goriška Brda (western Slovenia)
This is probably the most famous winegrowing region in south-western Slovenia, sometimes referred as 'Slovenian Tuscany'. The Adriatic influence meets the Alps here and provides very special climate conditions for the best wines you'll find in Slovenia. Beautiful landscape, excellent wine and first class culinary & accommodation offer. And here is our tip for the cycling trip.
Sleep & eat: Štekar Farmhouse for the 'nature lovers', House Marica for the 'urban guests' and Hotel Gredič for everyone who is searching for something different. :)
3. Kungota cycling path near Maribor
Just a few kilometers outside of Maribor (Slovenia's second biggest city) you'll find the most romantic vineyard in Slovenia! It is right on the border with Austria and offers amazing cycling trips, which can be shortened or prolonged as much as you wish. This is a bit less known region, but also has a lot to offer in terms of accommodation, local culinary delights and of course wineries. A perfect 10!
In this moment we can not give you any first hand recommendations on where to sleep & eat near Kungota (Maribor). We are going there again next weekend so stay tuned for more information about this :)
I wish you all a fabulous October! Enjoy it!
